Motivation Type Check

Is Your Motivation Built to Last?

Find out if your drive comes from inside you or from outside pressure.

This tool was built by Serge using established research and public sources. My work focuses on the practical side of focus, habits, and discipline. My tools are for educational purposes and give practical guidance, not professional advice.

Here is something I learned the slow way: motivation that runs on pressure burns out fast, while motivation that comes from real interest tends to stay. Neither is wrong, but they behave very differently over time. Answer three honest questions about one goal, and this tool shows you which kind is driving you. It fits closely with the idea that pressure you pile on yourself can work against you, and that the goal has to be your own to stick.

How this works

The tool compares your inside reasons, such as interest and doing it anyway, with your outside reason, such as pressure. It turns the balance into a single figure: the share of your drive that comes from inside. The higher that share, the more staying power your motivation tends to have.

Understanding your result

A high internal score is a good sign for the long run. A low score does not mean you are lazy. It usually means the goal is tied to pressure rather than real interest, which is tiring to sustain. Often the fix is to reshape the goal so it connects to something you care about, the way steady, self-chosen effort tends to last.

Important note

This is a quick reflection from three sliders, not a personality test. Your answer can change from goal to goal and month to month. If you want to see how that drive shows up in your actual habits, pair it with the Consistency vs. Intensity Scorecard.

Scientific basis

The split between internal and external drive comes from a major body of motivation research:
